Job Description

The Senior Designer will be a key member of the team, helping lead and further urban design projects, working with and coordinating staff to execute design assignments and tasks, and working closely with the Director on project and client coordination support and business development. We are looking for experienced candidates with a combined background in architecture and urban design/planning. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who can understand and translate client design goals in a manner that leads to client satisfaction, repeat business, and referrals.

The Senior Designer is required to understand good urban design principles for 21st century cities, as well as working knowledge of architectural design, especially mixed-use and housing typologies. Ability to quickly communicate concepts through drawings/sketches and experience with a diversity of design project types is preferred, including visioning, site capacity studies, conceptual public space design and planning and creating design guidelines, research documents and reports. Strong verbal and visual communication skills, ability to write clearly and concisely, as well as experience with executing outreach efforts is preferred.

We are looking for applicants who are confident decision-makers, visual thinkers, good team players, communicative, flexible, and aligned with the mission and values of Studio One Eleven. This is a full-time position based in our Long Beach office, with the option for flexible/hybrid work.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate quality design and documentation that can be easily interpreted and utilized by clients, agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Lead and inspire design staff and parties outside of the company to produce the highest quality projects within program requirements.
  • Supervise internal design staff as directed by the Directors and Principals. Monitor ongoing work and review compliance with contract documents, budget, and schedule.
  • Coach design staff and promote staff growth.
  • Coordinate with the Directors and Principals to maintain project continuity and design intent throughout the project tasks and phases.
  • Support Directors and Principals in managing project schedules, and client communications.
  • Coordinate with Directors and Principals for all project design meetings.
  • Make design presentations to clients, civic associations, and government bodies.
  • Be comfortable facilitating and leading meetings as needed.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and evaluate the work of consultants and vendors to guide quality and schedule compliance.
  • Lead the preparation of materials required for project proposals as requested. Coordinate the input of the Design Director and marketing staff.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, planning or urban design.
  • 5 – 8 years of professional experience in urban design/planning with a focus on site planning and architecture.
  • Advanced knowledge of urban design plans, architectural typologies, planning and zoning frameworks, creating drawings and graphic presentations and writing reports.
  • An advanced understanding of architectural design and site planning.
  • Advanced proficiency in SketchUp/Rhino, AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop) required, as well as their application in developing and presenting design documents.
  • Maintain understanding of current industry developments and design and planning trends.
  • Proficiency in sketching is preferred
  • Effective English communication skills, conversational and written, for ongoing project collaboration and documentation.
