Job Description

The City and County of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to fill a full-time Senior City Planner position in our Planning Services Division’s Citywide Planning and Implementation team.

The Senior City Planner will develop and lead planning projects with a focus on regulatory implementation. This includes writing major changes to the Denver Zoning Code, processing complex rezonings, and writing design standards and guidelines. The position will be a key member of a team of dedicated planners committed to implementing our city’s visionary new plans: Comprehensive Plan 2040 and Blueprint Denver.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead regulatory projects to implement planning goals, including writing Denver Zoning Code amendments and drafting and reviewing design standards and guidelines.
  • Coordinate complex planning projects, which may include multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional efforts and may include overseeing the work of consultants and staff. This entails developing scopes of work, timelines, and budgets.
  • Project manage diverse project teams.
  • Lead rezonings (map amendments).
  • Proactively engage the public in planning including facilitating meetings, making effective presentations, and bringing together stakeholders to discuss proposed planning initiatives, assess obstacles, evaluate opposing views and interests, and determine areas of support

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Three or more years of professional experience in community planning, ideally with direct experience writing regulations
  • Experience with development regulations, especially zoning code, and implementing plans
  • Experience leading interdisciplinary teams
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Efficiently demonstrates excellent time/work management skills
  • Works well under pressure and able to multitask
  • Problem solver that can envision various outcomes and plan accordingly to mitigate risky outcomes

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in City or Regional Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Engineering, or a related degree.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of professional planning experience.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver’s License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
