Job Description

The Valley Project Planning office is pleased to announce several internship openings. This is an exciting opportunity to see the City’s plans and policies in action and gain hands on experience in the field of City Planning. The Valley Project Planning division processes a variety of cases including Director’s Determinations, Subdivision cases, Zoning Administration and City/Area Planning Commission recommendation reports.  The section is hiring an intern to assist assigned planners and clerical staff in various aspects of the processing and administration of cases.  The intern will work closely with planners and clerical staff to perform a variety semi –professional and administrative duties.  Students interested in pursuing planning careers are encouraged to apply.

List of Duties:

  • Attend public meetings and hearings and assist in the preparation of staff recommendations.
  • Assist in producing environmental clearances, letters of determination, and staff reports.
  • Review cases files for completeness and work with applicants in filing necessary items.
  • Assist in the distribution of case information to various departments and government agencies.
  • Finalize and distribute (via mail and e-mail) hearing notices, reports and hold letters, termination letters, and correction letters, and letters of determination.
  • Finalize, link and upload hearing notices, agendas, staff reports, and letters of determination to the Department’s website.
  • Check e-mails for agency and other department reports, download and appropriately store these documents for access by planners.
  • Assist in general support duties and initial contact with the public counter.
  • File and organize records.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative data collection, research, and analysis.
  • Experience preparing written reports with minimal typographical/grammatical errors.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a variety of time-dependent tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.

Application Instructions

The intern position is unpaid, but may be offered for course credit as needed.

The position is expected to put in approximately 16-24 hours a week, and spread out at a minimum of 2 to 4 days a week. The schedule can be managed around classwork and finals. The position is located in the Valley Project Planning office at 6262 Van Nuys Boulevard, 4th Floor, Van Nuys, CA 91401. The office is approximately 3 blocks north of the Orange Line Van Nuys Station.
