Job Description

The City of Laguna Beach, California is recruiting for a highly experienced Director of Community Development to manage the day-to-day activities of the Community Development Department. The successful candidate will have a broad background in urban planning, community development, and economic development principles, and a strong track record of success in managing a multi-faceted organization. The new Director will work closely with the City Manager’s Office and will be directly responsible for a Department of 35 FTE positions. With an annual budget of $6.6 million of the City’s $69.3 million General Fund budget, the Department is responsible for all planning and zoning, intergovernmental relations with the California Coastal Commission and other planning agencies, oversight and implementation of the City’s Local Coastal Plan and state-mandated Housing Element, building inspection, and code enforcement and implementation. The ideal candidate will be results-driven, with well-grounded, ethical decision-making skills, superior interpersonal and communication skills, outstanding public speaking abilities, and must display strong leadership characteristics.

The annual salary range for this position is $145,248 to $216,420. Placement within the range is negotiable and DOQ. The City offers an outstanding benefits package including CalPERS retirement.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of responsible managerial, administrative, and supervisory experience in Community Development. A Master’s degree is desirable. Membership in AICP is preferred.
