Job Description

The Office of Los Angeles City Councilmembcr Paul Koretz (5th District) is seeking a Senior Planning Deputy lo assist with policy and project planning, zoning, and land use in one of the most challenging districts in the City in terms of development. Councilmember Koretz’s district includes parts of West Los Angeles and all of Encino in the San Fernando Valley. The ideal candidate must be able to work in either our West Los Angeles, Encino or City Hall offices. As the lead of the Councilmember’s Planning and Land Use team, the Senior Planning Deputy manages and oversees all land use projects and policy matters in the District, supervises the Planning Deputy, and helps guide the public through any given planning process.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing land use and building permit applications for completeness and compliance with building standards;
  • Tracking applications through the public process;
  • Responding to constituent questions about proposals in a timely fashion;
  • Conducting site visits and regular tours of the various communities in the district;
  • Attending Neighborhood Council and Homeowners Associations meetings (some nights and weekend meetings required), public hearings, office hours, and other district events;
  • Representing the Councilmember at various hearings and meetings;
  • Assisting in drafting, editing, and preparing correspondence, briefing memos, legislative motions and other documents.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Required Work Experience and Education:
The well-qualified candidate should have a bachelor’s and/or master’s Degree in Planning or a related field, and/or a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience. Working knowledge of local planning and land use issues, zoning, permitting or related public processes, and knowledge of West Los Angeles and Encino are helpful. Strong communication skills are required, both written and oral, as the position requires public speaking. Candidate must be a team player and a good listener.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $70,000 – S 110,000/year DOE

This is an exempt, at-will position. The individual appointed to this position will not accrue any civil service tenure. contractual employment rights, or due process rights. The incumbent may be removed without any finding of cause by the hiring authority.
