Job Description

The City of Hawthorne is seeking a strong innovator, communicator, collaborator and leader
who can effectively interact with members of the community, staff, Planning
Commissioners and City Council. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and
experience in the Planning functions including zoning, community development,
redevelopment as well as grant administration. Will be able to quickly adapt and
understand Hawthorne’s zoning and planning issues. The candidate will stay up to date
with new State legislation, explain to City Council how these changes impact City of
Hawthorne and make recommendations on how the Department will implement these
changes. A successful incumbent will evaluate the department’s efficiency and effectiveness
with processes and procedures to make appropriate changes for enhanced customer service.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in planning, social science, economics, public administration,
    architecture or related fields.
  • Ten (10) years of responsible professional experience in local planning, including five
    (5) years in a supervisory, senior or principal level managing other planning/
    community development staff.
  •  Master’s Degree of additional graduate training in City and regional planning,
    economics, engineering or other related fields is highly desirable.
  •  AICP Certification is required within first six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
