Job Description

Nature of Work

Advanced level professional work in City planning.
 
Work involves performance of difficult and complex City planning work under a minimum of supervision and direction. Employee plans and outlines difficult or complex planning studies designed to facilitate comprehensive planning reports. Work performed by employees in this class is more varied, requires greater experience and training, and entails the exercise of considerable independence in work performance. This position may work in any area, division or section of the Department, such as Land Development, Community Planning, General Planning, Urban Design or GIS.
 
Supervision is usually exercised over a group of professional and technical personnel engaged in the preparation of planning studies concerning the physical, economic and social development of the City. General direction is received in the form of consultation with the Assistant Director, Planner III or the Department Director, who reviews planning recommendations formulated.

 

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Essential Functions

Work involves performing difficult and complex City planning work under minimal supervision and direction, including tasks related to physical, social and economic aspects of the City and its neighborhoods.
 
Reviews existing zoning provisions and makes recommendations for the revision of zoning ordinances to address City needs. 
 
Reviews and makes recommendations, as necessary, on proposed landscape, architectural and urban design plans for City permits.
 
Performs extensive research and preparation of reports, statistical compilation, and graphic presentation of various phases of the planning program, including population, social and economic characteristics, commercial and industrial trends, housing, tourism, building types and uses, public improvements, public facilities and parks, recreational and cultural facilities. 
 
Responsible for establishing and implementing sound urban design principles to achieve the highest standards for architecture, landscape architecture and urban design that will guide current and future development of the City of Miami.
 
Compiles related and supporting data for use by the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board, the City Manager and other interested agencies. 
 
May conduct field surveys and inspections.
 
Performs related work.
 

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in City, Regional, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architecture History, Historic Preservation, Environmental, Geography, Art History or a related field and  (3) three years of professional City, Regional or Urban planning experience. Skill in the use of AutoCad, GIS or other relevant software may be desirable. A Valid Driver’s License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver’s License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained valid throughout employment.
