About the Position

PlaceWorks is seeking full-time, mid-level and/or senior-level Environmental/CEQA Planners to become part of the Environmental Team in our Santa Ana Office. This position prepares and processes environmental documents to comply with CEQA and NEPA, performs project management, and supports project teams in all aspects of providing environmental consulting services to our clients. This position also provides the opportunity to train and mentor team members. Our environmental planning practice encompasses a variety of private and public sector project work including environmental review of general and specific plans, schools, parks, mixed-use development, commercial centers, and infrastructure projects. 

We are seeking individuals with a minimum of 5 years’ professional experience preparing CEQA/NEPA documents and successfully managing CEQA projects. The ideal candidate is passionate about environmental services work and is engaged in using their skills for the betterment of communities and the environment. The ideal candidate has excellent technical writing skills; is a creative problem solver; is outgoing and can maintain a sense of camaraderie; can successfully manage projects, work products, and clients; and has the ability and interest to train, mentor, and guide team members.

Responsibilities

This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing technically sound and legally defensible analyses and environmental impact assessment documentation, including technical writing, analysis, review, and quality control, in compliance with CEQA and NEPA.
  • Processing data and writing impact analysis for initial studies and environmental impact reports (EIRs).
  • Coordinating and overseeing most aspects of project management for CEQA/NEPA projects of all sizes, with minimal or no oversight from Principals/other senior staff (the amount of oversight and direction is expected to decrease as experience is gained). Examples include, but are not limited to: proposal writing, staff and sub-consultant coordination, staff oversight, scheduling, budget control, contract review, status reports, client interaction, quality control, and community outreach.
  • Attending meetings, public hearings, and interviews with Principal or other senior staff member.
  • Assisting with marketing, business development, and proposal writing efforts in pursuit of future work opportunities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with clients, including public and private sector clients, community organizations, and other firms.
  • Coordinating and conducting presentations at community workshops (these meetings may occur on weekday nights and weekends).
  • May assist with mentoring staff members, investing in their on-going training, goal-setting, and professional development.
  • May assist with supervising and guiding staff in all areas of project management and technical skills, effectively delegating work, providing clear direction, and timely feedback.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

The individual will also possess the following key qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Masters degree in urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning; land use or environmental law; or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience preparing CEQA/NEPA documents and project management experience with CEQA projects, preferably in a consulting firm. Strong knowledge of, and experience with, CEQA and NEPA compliance and latest changes to CEQA Guidelines and legislation.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and effectively supervise environmental planning staff members is highly desired.
  • Outstanding technical writing, research, and analytical skills, with a high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects within budget and schedule.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Able to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment with other team members.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint). 
  • Have a current and valid driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, and acceptable MVR to drive on Company business for site visits and meetings.
