The County of San Luis Obispo seeks a Senior Planner to join the Department of Planning and Building. This is an excellent opportunity to apply your experience and knowledge to support advanced long range, current, housing, and environmental planning projects. This position offers the right candidate an opportunity to work on a wide array of planning projects in policy formulation, complex inland and coastal development, housing, energy, resource management, and other areas.

THE JOB and the IDEAL CANDIDATE

Senior Planner

The Senior Planner is a high-level technical position responsible for the most complex and controversial planning projects that the department oversees. This could include cannabis ordinance development and permitting, community planning, development and environmental services review, energy and natural resources management, airport planning, and housing and economic development planning. Typically, the Senior Planner manages long term planning projects related to the general plan, environmental review, or other areas, as needed. While the Senior Planner does not manage staff directly, they will mentor and oversee others, as assigned.

The ideal candidate will be well versed in a wide variety of planning principles and will bring many years of complex planning experience. The individual will be a self-motivated and an independent worker with excellent interpersonal skills to liaise with the County Board of Supervisors, state agencies and other stakeholders, as well as facilitate public meetings. Strong writing and communication skills are a must as this person will regularly make presentations, respond to inquiries, and synthesize and translate complex technical planning information for less technical decision makers and the public-at-large. An in-depth understanding of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to environmental and land use planning will be necessary, as will an understanding of pertinent engineering principles, life sciences, and CEQA.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited institution with either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in urban and regional planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, natural resources management, environmental, physical or life science, or a closely related field. (Para-professional or higher level job related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • In addition, four years of professional level experience in urban and regional planning and environmental review/analysis or environmental impact assessment work which requires a state approved specialized professional license or certification.
  • A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
