Salary Range: $64,586 – $84,272 (plus excellent benefits)
Full-time permanent position (subject to probation)
The Assistant Planner is a critical part of the Planning Department team, working independently and also supporting senior planners on interesting current and long range land use planning projects, involving research, development review, site visits, writing and working with the public. In the setting of a small, dynamic coastal city, the staff member will review a variety of applications, from residential and commercial development projects, to use permits and wireless facilities that grow in complexity as experience is gained. Success in this position is intended to prepare the staff member for more advanced work within the department.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of land use planning laws and practices, development and zoning administration, and California local government and coastal planning. Knowledge of site planning and architectural design principles, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) are required. The ideal candidate will have the ability to conduct research projects, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations and prepare effective technical staff reports, interpret planning and zoning programs to the general public,
and prepare clear and concise reports and other written materials. The ability to effectively interact with the public in a positive and helpful manner and to handle multiple projects while working comfortably in a fast-paced team environment are critical. Skill in Microsoft programs is required; optional skills include ArcView (GIS), Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop and/or Google SketchUP.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Minimum Qualifications Required
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in urban planning, community development, public administration or a closely related field and one year of professional experience in planning, zoning and related community development activities. Two years is preferable. Experience working in a professional planning environment is desired, especially work experience in a California coastal community. Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License and have a satisfactory driving record.
