Coro Fellowship Program in Public Affairs an experience unlike any other.
One of the highest-rated leadership and public affairs programs in the country, the Coro Fellows Program is a nine-month, full-time fellowship that prepares professionals for effective leadership in all areas of civic life. Fellows are equipped with Coro’s unique, civic-style leadership training, built on understanding complexity and solving problems across traditional boundaries.
Fellows don’t just learn, they do.
Coro Southern California selects 12 Fellows annually from a highly competitive applicant pool. Through five individualized placements across all sectors of industry, Fellows gain valuable work experience in government, labor, business, nonprofits, and electoral politics. Through experience, Fellows develop the critical skills necessary to engage and empower communities and master the art of collaborative problem solving.
The Fellowship is a full-time, 9-month program, beginning in September, 2019 and ending in May, 2020. We are currently recruiting for the 2019-2020 class and we are excited to provide this life-changing experience free of charge to this next class of Fellows.
Program Components:
Placements allow Fellows to gain direct exposure to varied sectors and institutions in Southern California and offer participants the opportunity to build robust professional networks. Each Fellow completes a government, electoral politics, labor, business, and nonprofit placement and is responsible for delivering a high-quality project to each organization at which he/she works.
Weekly Seminars provide Fellows with the tools and frameworks that increase their ability to successfully contribute to collaborative group and lead change. Additionally, seminars allow Fellows to explore the city through experiential activities that help them better understand the neighborhoods of Los Angeles, organizations and key policy issues facing the city.
Leadership Interviews offer Fellows access to an influential cross-section of city leaders, helping them gain insight and diverse perspectives on the challenges of leadership. These closed-door sessions provide Fellows with the rare opportunity to explore the motivation, method, and logic of the individuals shaping our city’s future.
Focus Weeks immerse Fellows in the exploration of a single topic for a full week as a cohort, including an exploration of the California state government system and other topics that vary by year.
The Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs is offered in four regions: Southern California, New York, Pittsburgh, and Northern California.
Coro Southern California provides qualifying Fellows who request financial support with a monthly stipend to defray living expenses during their nine months in the program.
About Coro Southern California
Coro was founded in San Francisco in 1942 by W. Donald Fletcher, an attorney, and Van Duyn Dodge, an investment counselor, to train young veterans in the leadership skills necessary to assure that our democratic system of government could more effectively meet the needs of its citizens. Since 1947, when the first program was delivered, Coro has grown to include Coro Centers in five cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles (1957), St. Louis (1972), New York (1980), and Pittsburgh (1999). With substantive programs for youth, recent college graduates, and professionals, we cultivate emergent leaders at all stages of their lives and careers. Graduates come away from Coro with a deeper understanding of how their region works, the leadership skills to contribute to its success, and a network of engaged and influential alumni to help them reach their goals. Coro is a collaborative community with a shared belief that a single person, with the right knowledge, skills, and network, is what will make Southern California a better place for all who live and work here. Between 300-400 participants a year go through Coro programs nationwide. At least 10,000 program alumni are currently serving as leaders in local, regional and national/global businesses, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies and elected public office.
