Are you a strong leader who has taken an organization to the next level? Do you understand the beauties and challenges of biking in Los Angeles? Do you believe that everyone, regardless of race, income, gender, or background deserves the right to travel safely on our streets?

Entering its 20th year, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition is the County-wide voice in advocating for safer streets for people biking. The Board of Directors is looking for a leader who will be at the helm of a movement that is making bicycling healthy, safe, and fun in Los Angeles County. This year will kick-off our strategic planning process, and will have you working with board, staff, and communities to help shape the future of LACBC and biking in Los Angeles County.

Position Summary

As the Executive Director (ED) of LACBC, you will be responsible for the overall management and administration of the organization, which is focused on community-based education, advocacy, and events. This includes leadership of our team of eight, plus mission delivery and program impact, staff and contracts management, fundraising and financial management, as well as overseeing partnerships and advocacy. In this role, the ED will be responsible for helping shape and actualize the organization’s strategic goals and facilitate future strategic planning efforts. The ED will ensure the achievement of the organization’s overarching goals and create an organizational culture that provides programs to help transform community members into safe street advocates, and the county into a place that is safe and accessible to bike.

Roles and Responsibilities

Organizational Strategy and Leadership

  • Partner with Board and staff to develop a strategic plan with measurable outcomes and milestones to ensure effective operations that achieve the mission.
  • Develop annual work plan and budget consistent with the strategic plan, with staff input.
  • Oversee all programs, services, and operations of LACBC, ensuring they contribute to the mission and priorities of LACBC.
  • Support operations and administration of Board by serving as a liaison between Board and staff, and supporting the Directors to fulfill their governance function.
  • Weave racial, social, and economic justice into every aspect of LACBC’s work.
  • Create and maintain a supportive and effective work environment.

Organization and Program Management

  • Oversee all day-to-day operations, with appropriate staff partnership and delegation, including: administration, programs, campaigns, development, human resources, finances, technology, and communication systems.
  • Oversee human resources, including hiring, termination, benefits, and professional development; plan for necessary growth in staff compensation and staffing levels.
  • Lead financial planning, forecasting, and analytical activities; ensure alignment of financial plan with vision and strategy.
  • Effectively manage finances, including cash flow, payroll, invoicing, payables, and receivables.
  • Ensure compliance on contractual obligations and agreements.

Fund Development and Advancement

  • Work with the Board and LACBC’s Deputy Executive Director of Advancement to develop and oversee a comprehensive program to progressively grow the financial resources of the organization.
  • Engage with members, donors, foundations, corporate sponsors, partner organizations, and others as appropriate.
  • Work closely with development and membership staff to expand our membership and create a foundation of funding to support advocacy efforts.

Community Building and Advocacy

  • Work with the Board and Deputy Executive Director of Advocacy to implement a comprehensive program to improve the safety and accessibility of bicycling throughout Los Angeles County.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with diverse constituencies, elected officials, community members, and community partners, including the organization’s Local Chapters, and participate in local, state, and national advocacy efforts as appropriate.
  • Oversee marketing strategy that includes the creation of high-quality communications, including website, blog, email newsletter, social media, and media/press relations.
  • Serve as the main spokesperson for the organization, seek out opportunities for public speaking that advances LACBC’s strategic goals.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of nonprofit experience, including two years in senior management. An advanced degree in urban planning, transportation, public administration, management, law or related degree a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgets, resources, and multiple complex projects.
  • Demonstrated success with fundraising, including membership, corporate sponsorship, major donors, and grants.
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining positive working relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Desired Attributes

  • Passion and knowledge of active transportation planning/policy.
  • Understanding of equity and intersectional nature of transportation, including its relationship to housing, displacement, institutional racism, enforcement, public health, and environmental justice.
  • Experience and commitment to social justice work.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people and a wide range of faiths, beliefs, and experiences.
  • Keen judgment to effectively prioritize work in a fast-pace environment.
  • Ability to speak a second language, such as Spanish, Cambodian, Tagalog, or Mandarin a plus.
