Job Description

The City of Sonoma is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Planning and Community Services Director. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on leader who has deep expertise as a professional planner. Reporting to the City Manager, the Planning and Community Services Director oversees the Planning and Community Services Department and is responsible for current planning, advance planning and mapping functions as well as the City’s Sustainability Program, which implements the City’s Climate Action Plan and promotes environmental sustainability. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable regarding current tools and technology to engage broad community input in active and meaningful dialogue.

Located in the heart of one of the world’s premier wine-producing regions, this beautiful community offers its residents a vibrant lifestyle and rich, cultural heritage. Just 40 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Sonoma spans 2.7 square miles with a population of approximately 11,000. The adjacent scenic hills and agricultural valley provide a setting of unparalleled natural beauty.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and even years of increasingly responsible experience in planning, including three years of management oversight responsibility. A Master’s degree is highly desired. AICP is a plus. The annual salary range for this position is $120,892 to $146,945 plus an excellent benefits package including CalPERS retirement.
