Job Description

An iconic, world-class Southern California city, Malibu is nestled along 21 miles of stunning Pacific coastline. Following a 2023 organizational study, the city is establishing a new Community Development Department through a merger of Planning and Environmental Services. The new Director will shape the department’s structure, strategy, and operations while leading Malibu’s recovery and rebuilding efforts after the Palisades Fire. The department has 50.5 full-time employees and a $15.34 million budget for FY 2024-25.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with expertise in one or more of the department’s service areas. They will navigate Malibu’s unique challenges while delivering high-quality projects in a dynamic, high-expectation environment. Strong problem-solving skills, the ability to balance competing interests, and a commitment to the City Council’s policy vision are essential.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Qualified candidates will have eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in planning, building and safety, community development, engineering, and/or environmental compliance, including four (4) years in management, plus a Bachelor’s degree. California coastal community experience is highly desirable.
