Job Description

A full-service city on Southern California’s Pacific Coast with over 2,000 employees, Santa Monica (pop. 93,000) is one of the nation’s pre-eminent urban coastal communities and recently ranked among the top beach cities in the world. Appointed by the City Manager, the Community Development Director oversees an FY 24-25 operating budget of $30.7 million and is supported by 87 full-time employees.

As a vital member of the City Manager’s Executive Team, the incoming director will have a tremendous opportunity to shape the future of Santa Monica and play a critical role in advancing the Council’s priority of Economic Growth and Cultural Vitality.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability to balance interests, bolstered by a track record of resolving complex problems while maintaining focus on realizing the City Council’s policy vision. Competitive candidates will have five (5) years of recent, progressively responsible experience in city planning, community development, economic development, or a related field, with three (3) recent years in managing or supervising other professionals and a Bachelor’s degree. California coastal community experience is highly desirable.

Salary goes up to $268,020 DOQE and supplemented by attractive benefits.
